Our Foreign Policy is Taking us Down the Wrong Path

Over the weekend the US government decided it was a good idea to shoot down a Syrian fighter jet over Syria. The reasoning and justification put forward by the US government for this attack was due to the Syrian jet recently dropping bombs near US friendly positions in Syria. This is an act of war on our part, no bones about it. What we are doing in Syria is carrying out acts of war and it needs to stop. Had we done this to a nation that could strike us back they would have by now. Syria though can’t hit us back, they don’t have the power or technology to knock down our planes so what are they left to do? Syria either asked Russia, or Russia decided to take this action themselves, for help which resulted in Russia vowing to knockdown any US or British planes operating in any area that Russian jets operate over Syria. Well Russian jets operate over the entire country so they have now created a ‘no fly zone’ over Syria. These aggressive actions that we are taking in Syria need to end, our future might depend on it. These are acts of war on our part and we can only do this for so long before someone hits back.

If anyone asking if these are truly acts of war, as I know many are, I will frame it up this way. If another country were to shoot down planes over our country what would we call it? If another country was actively funding rebels within our borders to try and overthrow our government what would we consider that? If another country were to park warships off our shores and then launch missiles at our air bases, what would we call that? These would all be considered acts of war against our country but for some reason when we do it to others, it’s just not when the country we strike can’t hit us back. This is the policy of a bully pretty much. We attack countries that can’t hit us back.

Our meddling in the middle east needs to end, not soon but now. These continued wars and acts off aggression have done what for us? Have they made us safer? No, these policies have enraged young men and women around the world to hate us even more and want to attack us. Have these policies created more wealth for the nation? No, putting these wars on the credit cards of America is a poor policy of how to pay for them and have helped add to the national debt. Have these policies in the middle east brought more stability to the region? Clearly not, the middle east is a total wreck right now and we are currently engaged in Libya, Yemen, Iraq and Syria. Many of the justifications that were presented to go to war have brought about the exact opposite. This is why we need to change our policy, one that might bring the results we want, not the ones we are currently getting. Doubling down on our current policy is a path towards disaster.

These policies are leading us down a dangerous path and we need to be aware of it and how we need to correct it. The current policy in the middle east of attempted regime change is one of the many things we don’t need to be involved with and or doing. The policy of continued war isn’t working. The increasing violence is just breeding more violence. We need to look towards peace and how if that is what we truly want that we may need to pack up our bags and leave a country we have no business being in anyways. What we are doing in the middle east may bring us into a war with Russia, that much is clear and it should worry people. We don’t need to be over in Syria and we should just leave. I’m not sure how else to say it but some change needs to be made and fast, we are headed down the wrong path.

I recently wrote about our foreign policy a few weeks back and it can be seen here.
