Libertarian Convention in NOLA!
Hello there again readers and welcome back to Coffee Break Liberty, a blog where we tackle books, news and many other things under the sun where liberty is a guiding principle. If this is your first time here we would like to extend a special warm welcome to you and hope you enjoy yourself while here.
This past weekend in NOLA the Libertarian Party held their 2018 national convention. Though we were not able to attend, simply not in the budget of this passion project, we were able to get updates from delegates on the floor and from those in the LPMC (Libertarian Party Mises Caucus). For those that are unaware we have spoken with the founder of the caucus, Michael Heise, before and that interview can be found here. Additionally those that didn’t know, the LPMC held an event right next door to the LNC (Libertarian National Convention) which hosted great speakers such as Michael Boldin, Scott Horton, Tom Woods and a video message from Dr. Ron Paul with musical guest Backwordz. From what we here the event put on by the LPMC was a smash. There is one speech I wanna plug though for sure. Tom Woods gave a speech about the direction of the party and what the party should be known for. It is one of the better speeches we have heard in some time. Unapologetic truth, it’s what we wanted and it’s you will get if you click on this link. The speech was just awesome and as some would call a barn burner. Give it a listen!
Now though off of the LPMC event and on to the convention. Sadly our friend Joshua Smith didn’t win the national chair race. He lost by a large margin, that said he did get an “At-large” appointment which pretty much puts him on the Libertarian National Party’s board or directors, for lack of a better term and not getting too much into the weeds. We did see some other amazing things come out of the even too. Alex Merced won his race for the Vice Chair of the party ousting Arvin V. who has caused total mayhem in the last 14 months. It is our opinion that this was actually a bigger deal than that of the national chair race. AV has done little to nothing to help grow the party and has actually driven several prominent members away. Him leaving the LNC is a good thing, no other way to put it. Finally a resolution from the “Libertarian Socialists Caucus” (yes there is some how a thing) was defeated. To summarize it was garbage that stated the party would welcome all economic schools of thought as long as they didn’t force others to work for other people in servitude. This was viewed by many as a way to try and bring in more commies into the party. One of the writers of it proclaims himself to be a an anarcho-communist, which is an oxymoron.
One hit the party took was the rewording of the party’s platform language in reference to immigration. The line in the platform that called for the government to restrict entry into the country if the person, attempting entry, was deemed a danger to lifer liberty or property was removed thus leaving the door open for a lot of interpretation. This will be addressed in the next blog post here at Coffee Break Liberty, so be sure to return for that insight.
We really wanted to get this post out pretty quickly after the convention. The big take aways are the LPMC had a pretty decent showing and the speech Tom Woods gave…. Just give it a listen! Was amazing!
