Appalachistan and the 2nd Amendment in Virginia

Hello there again readers and welcome back to Coffee Break Liberty, a blog where we tackle books, news and many other things under the sun where liberty is a guiding principle. If this is your first time here we would like to extend a special warm welcome to you and hope you enjoy yourself while here.

The new year is just around the corner and in one state it has already become a tense situation. Richmond and Northern Virginia are simply at odds with nearly the rest of the entire state it seems. With the recent turn from red to blue in the state house of representatives and the state senate while gun control being the major issue, there looks to be trouble brewing.

Earlier this year, before the November elections that turned the state legislature blue, the Virginia governor, Ralph Northam was clamoring for a large overhaul of the gun laws in the state. What he wanted to see the general assembly pass were laws that pertained to, universal background checks a ban on assault weapons, to include suppressors and bump stocks, an extreme risk protective order, reinstating the one-gun-a-month law, child access prevention, requiring people to report lost and stolen firearms, expanding local authority to regulate firearms, including in government buildings. When these were first introduced they were shot down quickly. The general assembly at the time was red. Now though with the new legislatures coming into office in 2020 things might change especially seeing how the gun control issue was hammered upon on the campaign trail so much and also financed heavily by Michael Bloomberg.

It didn’t take long though for many counties to already start purposing ordinances that would make their counties “2nd Amendment Sanctuary Counties”. In short, they wouldn’t enforce these new laws if they felt the laws violated the US Constitution. Much like there are Sanctuary Cities that don’t enforce immigration laws. This is not the first time this has happened though, many counties in Oregon, New Mexico and Illinois have done the same.

What makes this situation different though, at least at first light, is that there has been speculation of the Governor mobilizing the Virginia National Guard to help enforce these laws, nothing like this has been purposed in the other states. This speculation too isn’t just from random people on the internet but members of the Virginia state government.

Here at CBL we don’t believe that it will come down to that though. Not sure how it will end but the Virginia National Guard isn’t who you want going in to try and confiscate firearms from people they most likely know and love.

If though, somehow it does come down to that. The National Guard won’t be enough, not even close. Not only will many of the NG members not follow those orders given but trying to tame a part of the nation, The Appalachian Mountains and the people that come from there has always been a hard task. The British weren’t able to do it, the Union army cold never pull it off and the amount of moonshine that came from the area during prohibition speaks to how well the federal government fared when they tried to enforce prohibition laws. Heck even the early European settlers had a hard time getting the natives out of the mountains! There might be something in the water up there, most certainly in the blood though. They will fight for their human right to defend themselves and their way of life. Gorilla warfare isn’t lost on them, Appalachistan wouldn’t be that far off.

As libertarians we seem always on the look out for a government entity that is trying to take more and more of our rights away. We have seen it time and time again and this time there might even be a showdown. We are not one’s that ignore such assaults on our liberties, we must point out such actions and try as we may to put a stop to them at the ballot box first.
