The Senate Voted Against Themselves

Hello there again readers and welcome back to Coffee Break Liberty, a blog where we tackle books, news and many other things under the sun where liberty is a guiding principle. If this is your first time here we would like to extend a special warm welcome to you and hope you enjoy yourself while here.

A starting point and a way to find the words for what happened Friday is hard to do. The US Senate was presented with a bill that would require the Executive branch to seek approval to strike Iran. The language was, in short, a restriction on the budget, none of it could be used to strike Iran without congressional approval. What is odd, is that the only branch allowed to declare war is the legislature as per the constitution. With this bill that really just reaffirms the constitutional powers and responsibilities given to the senate was voted down Friday. Go ahead, read that last sentence one more time.

A quick recap of our civics classes, the Constitution gives the power to declare war ONLY to the legislature. Sadly the legislative branch of government has been giving this power away to the executive branch for some time. We now have a congress that doesn’t even want the power they are given. Oh should it also be pointed out that the Constitution doesn’t allow any branch to vote away it’s power?! The entire purpose of the Constitution is to restrain the government and yet we see the legislature and executive acting outside of their powers. Perhaps we have the government we deserve, one filled with trash.

It’s a bit hard to tell if we will ever see the congress stand up for itself in this matter, one that literally costs lives. Until then though it looks like the executive will have no push back from the legislature if they decide to attack Iran and murder more people.

Being part of the pro peace movement can be tough but it is something most certainly worth fighting for.

Thank you for reading and please don’t forget to like and share!

Keep that coffee warm for us.
