Is the media lying about a gas attack?
Earlier this week the internet exploded with reports of gas attacks on civilians in the Syrian city of Idlib carried out by the Syrian government. These reports also tell us that about 70 people died in the attack and there was many children among that number. The narrative that Assad, the president of Syria, would gas his own people in the city of Idlib is what I find issue with. There are a few reasons why I don’t believe this action was committed by the Syrian government forces.
The first reason I don’t believe that Assad gassed the people in Idlib is because they don’t have any chemical weapons anymore. In 2013 when Assad DID gas rebel forces, in Damascus, the international community was enraged and demanded change with many threats levied against the regime. The compromise that was reached was that Syira would turn over all chemical weapons to it’s ally, Russia, for destruction. International weapons inspectors oversaw this process on confirmed in 2014 that all chemical weapons had been removed from Syria. This is my first issue with the story we are being told, Assad doesn’t have the weapons to carry out the attack.
The second part that raises the hair on the back of my neck is that it makes no sense for Assad to gas Idlib. His forces are winning the war and in many regions they have the enemy forces on the run. Using gas doesn’t make a lot of sense knowing the backlash that would be brought from the international community. When the Assad regime did gas people in 2013 even his closest ally criticized the act. This attack would not be necessary for Assad to carryout and would be a horrible way to stay in power. Knowing what happened the time that he did use chemical weapons, though Assad is a bad guy he is not stupid, it doesn’t seem like a great plan for longevity by upsetting the western world to the point of threats and even action again. Again, it makes no sense to use weapons like this in a war he is winning to piss off the west, who have laid threats before over actions like this.
The story the Syrian government is telling is one that we should listen to. Why? Because just a few weeks ago a US led air strike in Mosul that led to the deaths of 200 civilians by accident when a truck filled with explosives was struck. It does seem very plausible that an air strike could hit a rebel facility that produces chlorine gas, which is now being reported by some agencies as the chemical agent involved.
I feel we should be very skeptical of the story that western media is projecting. They seem bent as of the last two years on trying to lead the US and Russia into a conflict. I try to stay away from conspiracy type things but this is one where the hair raises on the back of my neck. We have seen this before, remember the Iraq invasion? We must invade due to nuclear weapons in Iraq…. Heck I believed it last time… this time I’m not so sure.
